Use of Social Network Sites Amongst Seniors

Two-thirds of adult internet users (65%) now say they use a social networking site like MySpace, Facebook or LinkedIn, up from 61% one year ago. That’s more than double the percentage that reported social networking site usage in 2008 (29%). And for the first time in Pew Internet surveys it means that half of all adults (50%) use social networking sites. However, when they do eventually upgrade, they are likely to leapfrog many of the earlier generations and become one of the early adopters of the latest technology. Senior, Women Embracing Tablets, E-Readers

Fifty-four percent of tablets owners are between 35 to 55+ years old, and just under half are women. In terms of e-readers, 61% are women and 65% are over 35 years old. This shows a dramatic increase in the average age of the user and the gender. For example, between Q3, 2010 and Q2, 2011 the percentage of female users of e-readers jumped from 46% to 61%. In terms of tablets, between Q3, 2010 and Q2, 2011, the percentage of users over 35 years old jumped from 38% to 54%. Read More >>

Internet users over the age of 55 are driving the growth of social networking through the Mobile Internet. Of the social network sites, LinkedIn is the most popular with the oldest demographic profile by some distance, followed by Facebook and Foursquare.

While social media use has grown dramatically across all age groups, older users have been especially enthusiastic over the past year about embracing new networking tools. Social networking use among internet users ages 50 and older nearly doubled—from 22% in April 2009 to 42% in May 2010. Global Internet Traffic Expected to Quadruple by 2015

This infographic illustrates the growth of internet traffic that is expected to occur between 2010 and 2015. The fastest growing areas will be the Middle East (52% growth), Latin America (48%) and Central Europe / Russia (39%) while North America will see a more modest 26% growth. In terms of growth in technology devices, tablets are expected to grow 750% and smartphones by a surprisingly modest 194%. Forty percent of adults aged 50+ consider themselves very or extremely comfortable using the Internet. Approximately one-quarter (27%) of 50+ users use social media websites, with Facebook being the most popular one (23%) by far. Three-quarters of 50+ people using social media websites are connected to relatives other than their children or grandchildren.
